About this Trail

The Pond Mountain Wilderness Trail is a section of the Appalachian Trail which ascends the horseshoe ridge line of Pond Mountain. The trail offers beautiful views of the Pond Mountain Wilderness Area which is filled with hardwood virgin timber dating back to the 1800's. Unique flora and fauna make this a great trek.

"The Pond Mountain Trail is rated Opportunity Class II, which requires limiting group size to a maximum of six people, limiting organized groups to a maximum of two, prohibiting commercial outfitter/guide activities, and practicing leave no trace visiting."

Directions to Trailhead (or put-in on water trails)

Start at Watauga Lake and go South on the trail or start at the Dennis Cove Appalachian Trailhead and make the 12 mile hike to Watauga lake.

Notes on Difficulty Rating

This is a very strenuous mountain, especially on the Dennis Cove side. Painful and continuous switchbacks make the uphill rather difficult for the inexperienced. The Watauga Lake side is not nearly as steep and can be scaled in roughly 1 and a half hours.
